Raccoon Repair
In preparation for some upcoming holiday shows, I have been surveying my inventory and deciding what I needed to create. After my Open Studio event, I felt I needed to create more Plant Peepers as all of the flamingoes and cardinals had flown away.
My kiln run was a combination of cardinals and raccoons. One of the raccoons is shown here. He apparently got too close to the cardinal and you can see some of the small black glass particles, called frit, that are used around the cardinal’s beak accidentally jumped onto the raccoon’s head. I did not notice this at first, but as I prepared to turn the raccoon into a Plant Peeper, I knew I had to repair the raccoon.
As the picture shows, I had to get out the polishing tools for my drill and then learn how to use them! I had planned to try the drum head with the slight sandpaper feel, but ultimately decided to use the softer pink headed tool that is designed for polishing. I hoped this would be strong enough to remove the small pieces of frit while leaving the rest of the raccoon the same.
The resulting repaired raccoon is shown here. Can you tell which one? He happens to be the one in the top center and you can tell because of the shape of his mask. The final step is to attach him to a stainless steel straw so he can go to a new home and peep out from a wonderful plant.
