Molds . . . but the Good Kind
Last blog I talked about making confetti glass and how much I liked it. The experimental glass has been fired and made into multiple projects. This photo shows, from left to right, the completed confetti glass, the windchime made from this glass and the incense holder also from the confetti glass. There is still a small piece of the glass left for some unknown future project.
Mold making was my experiment for this week. Heather and I took a workshop at Warm Glass in Clemmons and the photo shows me working on my mold and then the mold that Heather made for an incense holder and my mold for a drop ring bowl. The molds are made from paper clay – different from paper mâché – and have to be bisque fired for three hours, cooled, and then fired to 1700 degrees to make the mold firm and reusable. Next week I will make something using my new mold and see how successful I was in creating something to match my inspiration.
If my drop ring bowl project doesn’t work, I can either turn to one of my many molds shown here, or use some of the paper clay we bought and try making a better mold! Stay tuned next week to see how this mold worked. My new experiment for next week is finishes for stained glass projects. The silver solder is the traditional finish, but there are other options and I am exploring them.
