Creating Unique Glass

One of my favorite glasses to use is called confetti glass.  This is clear transparent glass that has flecks or lines of some contrasting color(s) to provide a unique look.  I love to use this glass for many projects and zealously guard each piece to get the most out of it.  I have recently experimented with using the scraps for windchimes, shown here, and loved the results.

The only problem with using this glass is that I like it so much, I use it up quickly.  One of my favorites, a clear with blue lines and dots, I hear is now out of production.  To ease my unhappiness at running out of confetti glass, I decided to try my hand at creating what I wanted.  I assembled the parts that I have – clear glass, some thin confetti glass (so thin that it is easy to snap into pieces with your fingers, frit (fine-grained or powdered glass), and stringers (long, thin rods of glass).  All my parts I plan to use are laid out in this photo, with a sample of purchased confetti glass in the upper right. I am not trying to replicate the purchased glass, but make something just as interesting.

Randomly placing the confetti glass, frit and stringers on the glass, I created a large  14” x 4” piece and fired it in the kiln.  Here is the result, which I love.

As my month of experimentation continues, check in next week to see what I have created with this new piece of glass.  I will also talk about the mold-making workshop that I am attending this weekend and what I hope to do with everything I learn there.  Following that, I hope to talk about the results of another new process I am going to try to create designs on glass.

We enjoy making items that represent special times or special people.  If you want a special item, contact us by emailing here or contact us on Facebook.
