What’s a Twirlie?

OK, so we made up the term ‘Twirlie’, but sometimes a unique item needs a unique name.  This particular stained glass item is made of a series of six curved pieces that nestle together to create a vague spiral shape with an open circle in the center.

The various steps are shown here, with each of the three twirlies created from different colors.  Starting in the upper left corner, the pieces have been cut and ground and laid out in the basic shape with the repetition of the three color choices.  The next step is the lower right where the pieces – this time alternating dark blue and clear - have been cut, ground, and had copper foil added so they can be soldered together.  After adding the copper foil, the pieces are pinned in place on a fire-safe board so that they can be soldered together correctly.  The final project is shown in the lower left, using alternating blue and green water glass for this twirlie.  Once soldered together, a chain is added to make this a suncatcher.  The final steps are to clean the project to remove extra flux and to make sure all of the solder is smooth.  The piece is then polished and ready for a new home.
