Repair Time

This disassembly of this large crescent moon stained glass piece was shocking to me when I saw the collection of remains resulting from its drastic fall.  It was truly surprising that the large blue crescent moon glass suffered no break, chip or fracture.  The only casualty of the fall was a break in one of the small clear pieces that dangle from the bottom.  The remains of the fall are shown here.

This piece was originally created by wrapping the moon with the thick silver-toned metal that vaguely outlines it in the photo and is called ‘came,’ which had been stretched to remove elasticity before wrapping the moon.  Unfortunately, this weighty piece has a single point of contact to hang and the came continued to stretch over time, allowing the frame for the moon to become misshapen and eventually to enlarge so much that the glass could move and escape.

After reshaping the broken clear dangle and re–attaching it to the existing chain, I reformed the existing came around the crescent.  The entire glass piece was pinned to a board to keep the came secure around the crescent moon.  On the reverse side, small wires were added at intervals to maintain the shape of the came frame and keep it from stretching again.  Here, the picture on the left is the front (where you can barely see the wires) and the picture on the right shows the back side with the wires in place.  Now this decades old stained glass gift can once again grace the window that is its home.
