Giving an Angel Her Wings

Spring is a time that we look for renewal, often by cleaning house, re-arranging beloved items on a shelf, or purging our closets.  We had given a friend this lovely stained glass angel many years ago and she had met with an unfortunate accident and lost a wing.

In an effort to keep the angel in one piece, several versions of glue were used, but none of them worked.  This is where I will digress to say that glass is heavy and trying to glue it back together - either glass to glass or glass to the solder that held it in place - just does not work.  There are many types of super strong glue and they work in many situations, but if you have a broken glass piece, 100% of the people I have talked with have had no success with glue.

So this angel returned home for her wing re-attachment.  In an effort not to take the whole piece apart, first I tried to clean the main body of as much of the dried and cracked glue as I could while leaving the basic structure untouched, as shown in the photo above.  I also had to clean the detached wing, on the right, and replace the copper foil in order to re-solder it to the body.

Once the cleaning and the necessary prep were done, I was ready to try to put the wing back in the right place and at the correct angle so that she could once again stand by herself.  As shown here, the wing fit snugly and correctly and she can once again fly out the DarionGlass workshop and go share her joy.
