Etched in . . . Glass
Finally, results for my custom-made mold. Here is the finished product, with the photo on the left showing the slight tilt to the vase and the photo on the right displaying how it is a perfect shape and size for my camellias.
This week I experimented with glass etching. I had not tried this before, but found some etching cream in the shop, so decided to give it a try. We also had some stencils to use and I selected a horse head. Shown here are the steps. From left to right, the stencil is applied to the clean glass, then the etching cream is applied while carefully staying inside the lines, with petroleum jelly on the outside of the head to resist the etching cream. After the cream has set, it is washed off and the stencil removed. The last photo, on red, shows the result, which came out the way I hoped.
I plan to combine this etching with some fused glass. I put this completed test piece through a kiln run and was pleased that the etching did not change at all. I need some new and different stencils, but look for some etching to appear in items this year.
So ends my month of experimentation. While I have been doing this, I have been working on other projects which I will be discussing in the future.
