A Cross-Eyed Bumblebee
DarionGlass sells many bumblebee plant peepers. When you want to purchase a bumblebee, you do have certain expectations – a black and yellow body, transparent wings, and ‘traditional’ eyes. It was the eye placement that threw off this bumblebee on the left. In all honesty, the little white dots were in place when the bee went into the kiln, but as they heated, they rolled slightly and the result was less than pleasing.
In order to ‘fix’ this bee, I needed to remove the existing eyes and fuse new ones in the correct places. I knew I would have to grind them off, but with the position of the wings, I would have to use my small hand drill to do this delicate process. The removal of all of the white glass did leave some pits and hollows in the area, so when I selected new eyes and their placement, I needed to lightly glue them in place (and cross my fingers).
The resulting ‘fixed’ bee, on the left in the photo, now looks good next to the sample bee and is ready to find a new home!
